Bent the poles (a bit) in crazy sustained winds while island camping off CA, came back to it completely flattened under heavy slushy snow in NH but it just keeps bouncing back. Seriously much more durable than you’d expect. And so livable!

Hey Jason, thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! This tent and the SlingFin Portal are two excellent competitors. If you use trekking poles and hike in nasty weather, the Portal is an excellent choice for its weatherworthiness and the ability to hook trekking poles to it. The Portal is a very well-built tent. It also has a longer brow pole and a bit more headroom. That said, its length is shorter, and it doesn’t have as good of pockets, so its gear storage is a bit more limited. It also weighed 2-3 ounces more than the Copper Spur on our scales at home. Overall, those are two of the best freestanding backpacking tents on the market, and both are editor’s choice winners for us, so it’s a tough choice.

I saw a lot of reviews on REI that complained about rainfly failure. Maybe the reviewers are just getting confused about condensation. Regardless the SlingFin’s silicone coated fly should hold up better BA’s polyurethane coating.

I’m still debating between these two tents. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

I am literally going down your entire 2018 list for best gear, and could not be more excited. I’m going straight from 2010 mediocre gear to 2018 ultralight. No other comparable investment could bring back so many amazing experiences, in my opinion. So far I bought this tent and the EE quilt/ sleeping bag. Thanks again for all these thorough and consolidated reviews!!! The mountains are a calling and I must go!

I agree, good call Kevin. I think you’ll really like the CS2.

Thank you, I should have added I already bought the 1P and set it up in my backyard and although I fit and peak height was sufficient , I can imagine with my 25 inch long pad in there I would literally be hitting all sides when moving around. I don’t think an extra 8 oz is much to fret about. The Nemo hornet and Tiger wall are both options but both are considerably shorter in length so that would likely be an issue. Outside of Zpacks I think the CS2 checks most of the boxes…
