Thanks Stout! I’ve made that Snow Lakes slog a few times and it’s not all that bad. Thanks for the update on the closure. Have a great hike buddy! Let me know how it goes.

Great post man! I wish I had this the first time I did the hike. I’m not looking forward to slog in from the Snow Lakes Trailhead, but the other way is closed until 10/31/17.

Cheers,
Stout

Hi Kevin, that depends on the year, but not usually unless you’re prepared for winter camping, snow travel, and possible winter storms. That said, every year is different, so I’d recommend checking the weather and current conditions closer to your trip. Hope that helps!

That being said, how far could one get into the other zones on day hikes from the Caroline Zone?

Can we camp at lake Stuart and hike over the pass and back the next day or should we go to horseshoe lake? It wasn’t what we were hoping for but am just happy we got a pass. Also… can we go to the walk-in an try and get a snow lakes pass even though we already have one for another zone? Thanks!

I’m heading out on Sunday and was planning on doing Stuart to Snow with packs. How challenging will hiking Asgard be with packs and the run off? We were planning on keeping it a short day around 4 miles. Appreciate the post and your insight!

This article is GREAT thanks so much for posting. We have a permit for June 8-12, camping in Snow Lakes. Planning to stay at Nada Lake the first night, and Snow lakes the second 2 nights with a dayhike up to the Core on day 3. Do we need snowshoes and ice axes this time of year, or can we get away with microspikes and hiking poles? Any other tips about that climb are appreciated. Cheers!

Hi Lucas, I think that’s a great plan. The hike to Little Annapurna is strenuous, but doable. I’d recommend starting out early in the morning. There will be a small amount of off-trail travel, but the route is generally easy to follow, especially when the weather is clear. Once you start your climb up Little Annapurna, there is a loose trail that’s easy to follow. As far as other day hike destinations, there are many lakes to explore along the main path and you could also walk up to aasgard pass for a very pretty view. Hope that helps!

I got a permit for June 16th in the snow zone and will be leaving June 18th. The plan is to hike to snow lake the first day and set camp. The second day I was planning on doing a day hike to little annapurna and returning to camp at snow lake. Do you have any details on how strenuous or long of a day hike from snow lakes to little annapurna would be? It looks like the trail ends and it is a scramble up to little annapurna. Also, do you have any other recommendations for day hikes from Snow Lake? Thank you!
