It was driving me crazy. After that first hike I took a real close look at the pack trying to figure out the issue. The first thing I found was that I had inadvertently cris-crossed two of the load straps. They are color coded, but it’s easy to mix them up.

I am not sure if the first problem. Contributed, but the second one was definitely the culprit. I was carrying my tent poles on the lower straps outside the pack like many people do. If you cinch something too small tightly in those straps, if deforms the bottom of the frame slightly and I believe this was what was causing the discomfort.

I put the poles inside and fixed the straps for the next 50 mile trip and not a speck of glute discomfort.
