Thank you so much Jennifer! I can’t tell you how much comments like these mean to me and our team. This is why we do what we do and why we strive to put out the best backpacking trip guides we can. Thanks again so much and happy hiking!

After reading about the Santa Cruz trek on Clever Hiker I organized a small group of family and friends to do the trek (+Laguna 69) with Eco Ice in late April 2024, it was magical, even better than we’d hoped for. I’ve also done the Cirque of the Towers and will do the Teton Crest trail this August, all thanks to Clever Hiker. And I just put the Sawtooth Loop on my list after reading your latest guide. Keep up the great work, I’d love to see more guides!

We are doing this solo next month. Question on camps: from the guidebook, it sounds like one really should stay in their established camps. But it seems like there’s a few spots where we might want to go just a few more miles. Is it quite offensive to the locals if you don’t stay in their established camps? And are there any new camps since the guidebook was published in 2015? Anyone know? Also, what sort of food can be purchased in Huayllapa? Thank you!

Thank you I did read it. I was just wondering if you had any others in mind. But I’ve been reading a lot about eco ice!

Thanks Jackie! Eco Ice Peru is a good one. Read the info in our post under the heading “Trekking Companies.”

Thank you for sharing, I’m currently planning a trip to trek the Santa Cruz! I was hoping to get some advice on which trekking company you would recommend?
Please and thank you 🙂

We didn’t bring any backpacking meals into Peru, but I would imagine things like Mountain House meals wold be no problem at all to fly in. Just make sure to declare them just in case. But I really can’t see them caring at all.

Huaraz is a pretty small town and we don’t remember seeing any Mountain House meals, but I’m sure you can get trekking meal supplies. You’ll just have to be a bit more flexible if that’s the route you want to take.

Hope that helps!

Did you bring backpacking meals with you into Peru, and if so, did you have any issues getting through customs with it?

Or were you able to find things like Mountain House and oatmeal in Huaraz?
