Hi – great questions! The Sea to Summit Ether Light XR has an R-value of 4.1, so it’s a solid 3-season pad. In our experience, it will keep most people warm down to 30* comfortably, with 20* at the bottom limit. You could certainly make it work down to 10*F, although this is stretching the warmth of the pad. We don’t recommend relying solely on the Ether for such cold temperatures. If you continue to use this pad in these temps, you’ll want to pair it with a very warm sleeping bag (comfort rated to 0*F, -5*F, or -10*F), and likely consider sleeping in base layers and a hat. We recommend adding a closed-cell foam pad underneath the Ether on cold nights to boost your insulation and peace of mind. Heat loss to the ground will make your entire setup feel cold, and foam pads are an ultralight, fairly affordable, and super versatile addition to any camping or backpacking kit. Our favorite is the Therm-A-Rest Z Sol, which would add 2 R-Value to your pad and make it much warmer, cushier, and safer on cold nights. You could also add a sleeping bag liner to boost the warmth of your bag. That said, for winter temps like you’re describing, you may want to look into switching to a warmer pad with a higher R-Value (if possible). Check out our best backpacking pads guide for backcountry options – my favorite is the NeoAir XTherm NXT – or snag a super cushy mattress if you’re car camping. Thanks! – Ian

I have heard some issues with the reliability of the R-value on this pad, would you put it at the equivalent warmth as the neo air? (4.1 vs 4.3) Would this pad with appropriate sleep system, be reasonable for the average sleeper (neither cold nor warm) with good bag/quilt/liner and baselayers down to 10 degrees F or would it need a foam pad under it? Thanks in advance and appreciate your detailed reviews
