I do not believe so, but you should probably check with the rangers to make sure

Would a backcountry permit still be required for the hike if I don’t intend to stay overnight?

Very good question. It really depends on the snow year. Some years the snow pack, deep banks, and soggy/muddy trails linger well through to the end of July, and some years the end of June is fairly open and clear. I’d say mid-July is usually a safe spot to shoot for, but it really does depend on the year, so you have to check current conditions as your dates arrive and look at the general snowpack percentage for that area. Hope that helps!

Do you know what the snow situation looks like on the Skyline in late June early July? I’d like to see the wildflowers, but August is too risky for smoke.

Really useful info about what to bring, the shuttle, and elevation. If you wanted to read about our adventure: https://typeatravel.blog/2018/07/21/jasper-national-park/

Is it because Cavell Road is closed right now which makes it that much harder to do a loop, because Tonquin Valley is probably swarming with mosquitoes right now while Skyline is above the treeline most of the way, or is there another reason I’m just missing? I’m heading up to Jasper later this summer and previews of each trails make Tonquin Valley look much more scenic and equally accessible.

Hey Brian, there are tons of other great hikes in the area, so you won’t have any issues with that. Have fun!

This looks like a great hike, but coming from the US it would be great to combine it with some other things since it’s fairly short.
