Hi Jacob,

3.5-4 days is definitely doable for this loop, though it really does depend on your fitness level, your experience, your pack weight, current conditions (snow pack, etc.) and your equipment. For example, if you wear heavy boots, carry a 50 pound backpack, aren’t in good hiking shape, and encounter slushy patches of snow, you’ll probably have a pretty miserable time out there.

To do this hike in 3.5 – 4 days you’ll need to hike 12.5 – 15 miles per day. That’s about the mileage that we generally like to hike per day, but we tend to hike faster and farther than most. If you train properly beforehand, carry a light pack, and are fully prepared for your hike, I think you’ll have an awesome time. But again, everyone’s different. I’ve hiked this loop in 2 – 2.5 days before, but 20+ mile days are too long for many/most hikers, so it’s all about personal preference.

If you do decide to go with that timeframe, my recommendation is to train properly starting at least 3-4 weeks before your trip, dial in your lightweight gear, and get early starts in the morning to give yourself plenty of time to hike on the trail. If you do all that, chances are you’ll have a great trip.

Hope that helps and happy hiking!

I’m planning a trip to the PNW with two other friends. We’re all in fairly decent shape but also don’t want to bite off too much.

Started at Lava Camp trail head and went clockwise. Water sources are reliable but was scare in a few areas, specifically the Pole Creek burn area as well as the Lava beds near the Opie Dillock pass. The sun is intense and leaves you completely exposed with no shade or water for miles. I was surprised at how hot it was and we required to stop at every water source to refill. The trail is completely snow free. Also mosquitoes and biting flies are a huge problem on the west side so be prepared for that. Other than that its an awesome time to get out there, the crowds are small.

Because of the fire they have closed. I. Searched and found this. Do you happen to know if there were any fires that made this loop unhikable?

Hi Zach,

This is a popular area, so spots can fill up in the summer for sure. That said, if you’re traveling mid-week that will help quite a bit. My guess is that you guys will be good to go, just make sure to plan out your route and get permits for any specific areas where you would need them. Have a great trip!

We’re planning on a mid-week trip but have found mixed reviews on how busy the campsites are.

Thank you so much and love your stuff,
Zach.

Not that I know of, but there are many trails in the area, so I’m sure you can still string together a lovely trip.

Cant get that much time off right now.
